To consider the motion set out below which, if approved, will confer the title of “Honorary Alderman” upon Mr E J Berry, viz:-
THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon EDGAR JOHN BERRY the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which he rendered as a Member of this Council from May 1999 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of his service as Chairman of the Council from May 2013 to May 2015, as Leader of the Council from May 2007 to May 2008, as Chairman of the Decent and Affordable Homes Policy Development Group from May 2011 to May 2013, as Vice Chairman of the Community Services Committee from May 2003 to May 2004; as Vice Chairman of the Environment and Leisure Committee from May 2001 to May 2002; and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.
AND THAT, in due course, a copy of this resolution, suitably engrossed and sealed with the common seal of the District Council be presented to Edgar John Berry.

The Council was reminded that the meeting had been specially convened, in accordance with the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, for the purpose of considering Motions to confer the title of Honorary Alderman upon: E J Berry, A V G Griffiths, M R Lee, Mrs J R Rendle, Mrs M E Turner and P F Williams.
(1) Honorary Alderman: Edgar John Berry
Upon a Motion proposed by Councillor R F Radford and seconded by Councillor T G Hughes it was:
RESOLVED THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon EDGAR JOHN BERRY the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which he rendered as a Member of this Council from May 1999 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of his service as Chairman of the Council from May 2013 to May 2015, as Leader of the Council from May 2007 to May 2008, as Chairman of the Decent and Affordable Homes Policy Development Group from May 2011 to May 2013, as Vice Chairman of the Community Services Committee from May 2003 to May 2004; as Vice Chairman of the Environment and Leisure Committee from May 2001 to May 2002; and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.

Upon a Motion proposed by Councillor S G Flaws and seconded by Councillor Mrs F J Colthorpe it was:
RESOLVED THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon ALAN VIVIAN GLYN GRIFFITHS the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which he rendered as a Member of this Council from May 1991 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of his service as Chairman of the Personnel Sub Committee from May 1998 to May 2001, as Vice Chairman of the Personnel Sub Committee from May 1997 to May 1998, as Chairman of the Joint Consultative Committee for National Joint Council for Local Government Services between 1998 and 2001, 2005 to 2006 and 2007 to 2008 as Chairman of the Community Well-Being Policy Development Group from November 2007 to May 2008, as Vice Chairman of the Community Services Scrutiny Committee from May 2002 to May 2003, and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.
AND THAT, in due course, a copy of this resolution, suitably engrossed and sealed with the common seal of the District Council be presented to Alan Vivian Glyn Griffiths.
(3) Honorary Alderman: Michael Roy Lee
Upon a Motion proposed by Councillor Mrs M E Squires and seconded by Councillor P J Heal it was:
RESOLVED THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon MICHAEL ROY LEE the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which he rendered as a Member of this Council from May 1995 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of his service as Chairman of the Council from May 2004 to May 2006, as Chairman of the Community Well-Being Policy Development Group from May 2008 to May 2010, as Vice Chairman of the Resources Committee from May 2004 to May 2006, as Vice Chairman of the Community Well-Being Policy Development Group from May 2014 to May 2015, as Vice Chairman of the Mid Devon Partnership Committee from May 2001 to May 2002; and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.
AND THAT, in due course, a copy of this resolution, suitably engrossed and sealed with the common seal of the District Council be presented to Michael Roy Lee.
(4) Honorary Alderman: Janet Rosemary Rendle
Upon a Motion proposed by Councillor Mrs B M Hull and seconded by Councillor N V Davey it was:
RESOLVED THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon JANET ROSEMARY RENDLE the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which she rendered as a Member of this Council from July 2001 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of her service as Chairman of the Exe Valley Local Action Group from May 2005 to May 2015, Vice Chairman of the Community Services Committee from May 2003 to May 2004 and a long standing Member of the Scrutiny Committee and Decent and Affordable Homes Policy Development Group; and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.
AND THAT, in due course, a copy of this resolution, suitably engrossed and sealed with the common seal of the District Council be presented to Mrs Janet Rosemary Rendle.
(5) Honorary Alderman: Mary Elizabeth Turner
Upon a Motion proposed by Councillor F J Rosamond and seconded by Councillor D J Knowles it was:
RESOLVED THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon MARY ELIZABETH TURNER the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which she rendered as a Member of this Council from its inception from 21 June 1973 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of her service as Chairman of the Council from May 1993 to May 1995; as Vice Chairman of the Council from May 1992 to May 1993, Vice Chairman of the Resources Scrutiny Committee from May 2002 to May 2005, longstanding Member of both the Policy and Development Committee and the Scrutiny Committee; and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.
AND THAT, in due course, a copy of this resolution, suitably engrossed and sealed with the common seal of the District Council be presented to Mrs Mary Elizabeth Turner.
(6) Honorary Alderman: Paul Francis Williams
Upon a Motion proposed by Councillor N A Way and seconded by Councillor R Wright it was:
RESOLVED THAT, in exercise of powers conferred by Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the Mid Devon District Council do HEREBY CONFER upon PAUL FRANCIS WILLIAMS the title of HONORARY ALDERMAN of the District, in recognition of the eminent services which he rendered as a Member of this Council from May 1995 to May 2015 recording particularly the Council’s appreciation of his service as Chairman of the Planning Committee from May 2007 to May 2011, as Chairman of the Peoples Park and Recreation Ground Trust Committee from August 2007 to May 2015, Chairman of the Grand Western Canal Joint Advisory Committee for a period of 12 years between 1995 and 2010, as Vice Chairman of the Resources Committee from May 2002 to May 2003, as Vice Chairman of the Policy and Development Committee from May 2001 to May 2002, as Chairman of the Environment and Leisure Committee from May 1997 to May 1998, as Lead Member for Member Development, instrumental in achieving the South West Charter for Member Development in 2010; and as a representative of the Council upon a number of other bodies and organisations.
